A tennis bracelet you never open

The classic tennis bracelet has a clasp, and the clasp is its weakest point: Chris Evert lost hers in the middle of a match. This bracelet has none. A titanium spring runs inside, and each link is guided on it individually. You slip the bracelet over the hand, it draws together and sits. On in the morning, off at night, without looking.

The titanium spring

Inside the links runs a spring made of titanium, invisible from outside. It gives way when you slip the bracelet over the hand and draws it back together on the wrist, the same every day. Titanium hardly fatigues, does not corrode and does not react with the skin. No box clasp, no safety catch, no dead side: the bracelet is set all the way round and looks the same from every angle. The only thing that harms the spring is overstretching, which is why the right circumference matters. 17.5 centimetres at rest is the standard, any other circumference is made on request.

Slipping on

Slip it over the hand, let go. The bracelet finds the wrist by itself, no clasp, no looking.

Comfort

The bracelet follows every movement, sits without pressing and never turns a clasp side up. Nothing catches on a sleeve or a watch.

Flexibility

The spring covers about three circumferences. Two or three bracelets stacked, in one gold colour or mixed: without a clasp, nothing interrupts the line.

The men’s tennis bracelet, all black and properly so: black diamonds in 18 kt gold with a DLC coating (diamond-like carbon, a hard, deep-black carbon layer that does not wear off the way rhodium plating does). A stretch bracelet is available at many addresses, and most of them compete on price. What you get is a series piece in a standard size, chosen by nobody, and the question of colour and clarity is answered by a form.

With me, a person buys the stones, and that person is me. I see the lot before it is set, examine every stone singly and lay them so that the bracelet holds the same white from end to end. On a bracelet without beginning or end, every outlier shows twice.

Then the setting: the stones must sit in line and true, each at the same height, each on the same axis. Let one tilt and the bracelet flickers unevenly instead of running as one light. The difference lies with the setter, and I have worked with the best for years.

The questions I am asked most often about stretch tennis bracelets.

What does Infini, the stretch tennis bracelet, cost?
Between €11,800 for the fine line XXS in Wesselton SI and €78,800 for the solitaire row XXL in River VVS, VAT included, the same in white, yellow or rose gold. The classic, size M with 58 brilliants of 0.10 carats in Top Wesselton VS, is €30,800.
How does a tennis bracelet hold without a clasp?
By a titanium spring that runs inside the bracelet. Each link is guided on it individually. To put it on, you slip the bracelet over the hand; it then draws back together and sits on the wrist. There is no clasp that could open and no safety catch that could be forgotten.
Why a spring made of titanium?
Titanium springs evenly for years, hardly fatigues, does not corrode and does not react with the skin. The spring lies invisibly inside the links; from outside you see only gold and stones.
Can a stretch bracelet wear out?
The titanium spring is built for many thousands of stretches. What harms it is not daily wear but overstretching: pulling the bracelet wider than needed shortens its life. That is why the right circumference matters more than on a bracelet with a clasp. Should the spring ever break, the workshop replaces it at no cost.
What circumference does Infini have, and what if my wrist is different?
17.5 centimetres at rest is the standard the prices refer to; the spring covers about three circumferences around it. To put it on, the bracelet has to pass the widest part of the hand, which it does by stretching. Clearly slimmer or stronger wrists get their own length, on request and at no extra charge up to 18.5 centimetres.
What do the sizes XXS to XXL mean?
Not the circumference but the size of the single brilliant: from 2.0 millimetres at XXS to 4.1 millimetres at XXL. With the stone, the total carat grows and the stone count shrinks, because fewer large stones fit the same circumference. The classic is M at 3.0 millimetres.
How many diamonds does a stretch tennis bracelet have?
Between 45 (XXL) and 78 (XXS) brilliants, depending on size. The classic M carries 58 stones of 3.0 millimetres each, 5.8 carats in total.
What do River, Top Wesselton and Wesselton mean?
They are the German trade grades for diamond colour. River corresponds to D–E on the international GIA scale, Top Wesselton to F–G, Wesselton to H. VVS, VS and SI describe clarity, from practically flawless to inclusions visible under a loupe but not on the wrist.
Is Infini available in yellow or rose gold?
Yes. White, yellow and rose gold 750, at the same price: it is the same alloy in a different colour, the stones and the titanium spring are identical. White gold makes the brilliants read coolest, rose gold warmest. Two bracelets in two colours side by side is the most frequent order.
Is there an Infini for men?
Yes: Infini Noir, the black stretch tennis bracelet for men. Black diamonds in 18 kt gold with a DLC coating, matt, without sparkle, worn under the cuff and next to the watch. The same titanium spring, the same principle: elastic, no clasp, simply slipped on. I buy black diamonds individually, so the price is quoted on request by stone size and circumference.
What is DLC, and why not rhodium?
DLC stands for diamond-like carbon: a very hard carbon layer a few microns thick that turns the gold deep black and matt. Black rhodium plating is thinner and softer; on a bracelet slipped over the hand every day it wears through within months. DLC takes it.
Is a stretch tennis bracelet elastic like a rubber band?
No. What is elastic is not the gold but the titanium spring inside the links: it gives just enough for the bracelet to pass over the hand, then draws it back together on the wrist. So the bracelet is stretchy and flexible, yet feels like a solid tennis bracelet, not like rubber.
Can several stretch bracelets be stacked?
That is the real appeal: without a clasp, nothing interrupts the line. Two or three bracelets in one gold colour or mixed, in the same size or ascending, sit quietly side by side and never catch.
How long does it take to make?
Four to five weeks from order: the mounting is built by hand on the titanium spring in Italy, then the stones are selected and set in Munich. The classic tennis bracelet with a clasp is ready in about two weeks.
Is Infini available with coloured stones?
Yes. Sapphire, ruby, emerald, spinel or tsavorite sit on the titanium spring just as brilliants do; the colours are in the coloured catalogue, the price is quoted on request.
Are the prices binding?
They are calculated at today's rates, but gold and diamond prices move. For a binding offer I recalculate at the day's rate; I buy the stones personally for every piece.
